END OF THE OREGON TRAIL INTERPRETIVE CENTER CLOSED FOR INDEFINITE TIME SEPTEMBER 2009
September 09, 2009...After fourteen years serving tens of thousands of school children and welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the globe, the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Oregon City closed its doors today. The staff and volunteers and board members who worked so hard to make this center a destination honoring Historic Oregon City thank our far flung community for their interest and support. We are saddened that many people will make the trek to visit and we will not be present to share the stories of the founding of Oregon. We are saddened that school children studying Oregon history will not have a chance to see and touch and hear the powerful story of how our state came to be. We are saddened that, despite our best efforts, we were not able to succeed in making Oregon City's dynamic history the dynamo of economic success. We go forward with the hope that our heirs, on some distant day, will lift a torch to the success of such an endeavor. But that day is not today.
THE CITY OF OREGON CITY RETAINS OWNERSHIP OF THE END OF THE OREGON TRAIL CENTER FACILITIES AND IS PURSUING OPTIONS FOR USE OF THE SITE. MEANWHILE, CLACKAMAS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY RESUMES MANAGEMENT OF ITS 2 SITES-THE STEVENS-CRAWFORD HERITAGE HOUSE MUSEUM (SCH) WHICH IS OPEN FOR TOURS, AND THE MUSEUM OF THE OREGON TERRITORY (MOOT) WHICH IS OPEN FOR EVENTS, LIMITED LIBRARY ACCESS, AND TOURS BY APPOINTMENT
Please note that the McLoughlin House, Ermatinger House, the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House Museum, the grounds of the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center's self guided exhibits and gardens and other sites in Oregon City continue to make wonderful presentations for public benefit at all of those sites. And we urge you to visit Oregon City simply for its unparalleled character and flavor. Whether you ride the municipal elevator or have a meal at one of our excellent eating establishments, Oregon City offers great hospitality. The extraordinary volunteers at Stevens Crawford House will continue to offer their dynamic and informative tours Wednesdays through Saturdays 11:00-4:00 (closed January 2010 for maintenance) Call for information or visit the tourism information center at the End of the Oregon Trail site.
If you wish more information about the problems and challenges we faced and attempted to surmount, we urge you to look at the AKT Report on Clackamas Heritage Partners at http://www.orcity.org/citymanager/clackamas-heritage-partners-report. We feel it is an accurate though brief assessment of our circumstances.
