Museum of the Oregon Territory

Overlooking magnificent Willamette Falls, second largest waterfall in the United States, the Museum of the Oregon Territory provides visitors with changing exhibits on the Oregon Territory, Clackamas County and Historic Oregon City. Recognized as the official End of the Oregon Trail, Oregon City was Oregon’'s first capital and major industrial and political center in the West.

The Oregon Territory encompassed the area from the Pacific Coast to the Rocky Mountains including present-day Oregon, Washington and parts of British Columbia. Beginning in 1843 the Oregon Territory became the destination for pioneers traveling on the Oregon Trail. As the first seat of government, Oregon City was where San Francisco had to file its plat map to become an American city in 1850.

The Museum of the Oregon Territory's exhibits cover 10,000 Years:The Indian Art & Trade in the Willamette Valley”exhibit features exquisite woven baskets and artifacts from area tribal communities. The Kaegi’ Pharmacy exhibit includes a fascinating display of bottles, potions and hand-rolled pills. Visitors also learn about Oregon City's mills, historic electric power  generating stations,early industries, architechture,  and witness the Willamette Falls significant natural and cultural heritage. Other notable objects include a piece of the famous Willamette Meteorite, the ships bell from heavy cruiser USS Oregon City,  ancient petroglyphs, and an 19th century fashion for the Opera display.


Investigate your pioneer roots in the Clackamas County Family History Society research library. Run by volunteers it is open to the public on Wednesdays and in the future, the 1st/ 3rd Saturday of the month. The Clackamas County Historical Society collection is also located at the Museum and is a great resource for researching land claim documents, marriage and death records and other articles pertaining to Clackamas County.
