Long before electricity, the art of candle-making was essential to daily life. Your students will be enthralled with the opportunity to make their own candle through the dipping process – a candle they will be able to take home and enjoy.
Chinuk Wawa Trade Language & Animal Identification
When no one spoke the same language, a new language arose by combining the many into the one…and trading animal furs was one of its many uses. Using animal furs to learn a few Chinuk Wawa words and experiment with trading, your students will also gain basic knowledge about these animals.
Get your hands dirty! Engage in a trio of hands-on round-robin activities to learn about bugs, seeds, and native-to-Oregon plants with wonderful volunteers from the OSU Extension Service Master Gardener program.

Overland Tour
Let’s travel a mini version of the Oregon Trail! We’ll wipe Oxen buggers, pick up buffalo chips, make butter, and sign our names on Independence Rock! We might even camp the night under the stars…or pretend to at least!
What’s could be more exciting than packing a wagon that is just like one that travelled the Oregon Trail? Step on up and grab a bag! Your group will figure out what needs to be packed and work together to prepare for their journey West.
Paw Quest
Follow the path to find all of the hidden paw prints of the awesome animals of the Pacific Northwest. As you find them, learn more about each animal and then…become the animal!
Pioneer Dress Up
Step back in time and dress up like the travellers of the Oregon Trail! Then hang out and play school, pack a wagon, and have your group photo taken with a wagon that actually traversed the Oregon Trail!
This will either be a storytelling or improvisation workshop (Teacher’s choice!) wherein students participate in activities that challenge them to explore their understanding about the impact of the settlers on Oregon.
